A Landmark Ceramic Commission
At County Hall Pottery, we believe clay has the power to connect people across cultures, generations and time. To showcase the potential of our large-scale kilns, we are inviting artists to propose a new ceramic sculpture for one of London’s most recognisable cultural landmarks.
This open competition offers one artist the opportunity to create a permanent outdoor ceramic sculpture for the historic courtyards of County Hall.
Rooted in the building’s layered history while speaking to the present moment, we are seeking a figurative sculpture that reflects ideas of peace. The work should feel timeless rather than temporary, a sculpture that belongs to its setting, invites reflection, and becomes part of the everyday experience of those who encounter it.
The Commission
The selected artist will receive:
- £10,000 commission fee
- Four months of dedicated studio space at County Hall Pottery (October 2026 – February 2027)
- Access to our large-scale kilns
- Materials provided
- Technical support from our team
The production period is non-negotiable, and the work must be made on-site during this time. If you are unable to commit to these dates, we encourage you to apply for future editions.
To maximise kiln capacity, the final sculpture should be between 1–1.2 metres in height.
What We Are Looking For
We are seeking proposals that are:
- Figurative (human or animal forms — no abstract work)
- Created primarily in ceramic
- Ambitious in scale and execution
- Thoughtful in their response to peace as a theme
- Sensitive to the historic architecture and character of County Hall
- Designed to live outdoors within the courtyard setting
Timeline
- Applications open: 6 August 2026
- Submission deadline: 6 September 2026 (midnight, UK time)
- Selected artist announced: September 2026
- Production period: October 2026 – February 2027
- Installation & public unveiling: End of February 2027
How to Apply
Applicants will be asked to submit:
- A proposal statement (500–700 words) outlining the concept, response to the theme of peace, and relationship to the site
- 1–3 images (sketches, renders, or maquettes) to communicate the form
- A brief technical approach to making the work in ceramic
- A portfolio of recent or relevant work (5–10 images)
- A short artist bio (max 150 words)
- Confirmation of availability for the full production period
We are looking for one strong, clearly communicated idea, rather than a fully resolved final design.
