Alice Wakefield makes thrown and hand-built functional wares, in both stoneware and earthenware clay blends. Alice completed the Clay College diploma course in Stoke on Trent in 2024. She now teaches in London-based alongside developing her own work.

In her own words:

I am fascinated by the immediacy of throwing and how my hands leave movement and life behind in the clay. It is the clay in its raw state that guides my practise. I look to aged objects for inspiration, especially those left with a rich patina and texture – salt and soda firings produce these weathered surfaces I look for. I believe in the therapeutic nature of craft and the accessibility of clay as a material. Running clay-based workshops with other artists, exploring play, imagination, and free expression, and creating community has become an essential part of my creative practise.

As part of our Feast exhibition in winter 2024, Alice displayed a selection of oxidised, salt glazed and wood fired stoneware and porcelain hand-built plates, each with stamping and inlay details. Some have texture left from the firing processes where she has wadded the plates with shells.

She oversees our workshop series and teaches our Monday throwing taster sessions.
