Can you start by introducing yourself and sharing an overview of your artistic practice?

Been working with clay/ceramics for 50 yrs making and teaching on some of the prestigious ceramic courses in the country: Goldsmiths college, Loughborough University and Camberwell.

What led you to explore ceramics? Was there a specific moment or inspiration that sparked your interest in working with clay? Long story… or at least a long history. How central is wood and alternative firing to your practice, and how does it shape your work?

The first time I touched clay made me want to discover more about the processes: firings, materials that are involved. The history, the different types, where it comes from, the chemistry and I am still learning.

Wood firing is a major part of my work it fulfills the process of making. I don’t use glazes on the wood fired work, I let the ash and flame create.

Do you have an interest in the Firing process? Does the firing process affect the shape or material application of your work.

More than an interest, it is a life long endeavor, the firing process will always affect the work what ever type of kiln. The wood firing process gives so much to the unglazed material.

Do you lend into the natural uncontrollable aspect of alternative (non electrical) firings or do you design your work to lend into the affects given?

I try to let the material speak for itself.

Where do you typically find inspiration for your art? Are there particular themes or sources that resonate with you

Inspired by the clay, the history of ceramics, the industry, how I feel that day.

Where do you create your work? Could you share a bit about your studio or workspace?   In my studio in Woolwich, South East London.

How would you describe the pieces you’ll be exhibiting at County Hall Pottery Gallery? What do you hope viewers take away from them??

Clay work freshly out of an anagama kiln, no glaze just ash and clay

What I hope viewers take away

An interest in what wood firing can give to the surface of clay

Do you have preferred techniques or materials you work with in ceramics? What draws you to these approaches?

No, I work all different ways, whatever is necessary.

What are you currently working on? Are there any upcoming projects or exhibitions we should look forward to?

I have been working solely for this exhibition.
