Can you start by introducing yourself and sharing an overview of your artistic practice?

My name is Edmund Davies, I’m a potter who mostly makes wheel thrown tableware. I did a little bit of pottery as a teenager at an evening class, but started up again in earnest after completing a BA in architecture (while avoiding getting a job in architecture). In some ways pottery and architecture are similar enterprises at vastly different scales.

What led you to explore ceramics? Was there a specific moment or inspiration that sparked your interest in working with clay?

I tend to see my work as quite a solitary pursuit, me sitting at the wheel, but for me that makes working within a community setting all the more important. I run a community pottery in Norwich, and have always shared my studios with other makers.

Do you have preferred techniques or materials you work with in ceramics? What draws you to these approaches?

My first love with pottery was and still is the wheel, I love the sense of total immersion while throwing, and the efficiency of motion with which it allows one to make 3d objects.

How would you describe the pieces you’ll be exhibiting at County Hall Pottery Gallery? What do you hope viewers take away from them? Can you talk about the specific materials and techniques you are using for this exhibition?

They’re a series of occasional tables, with glazed ceramic tops. I was eager to explore larger forms and playing with scale generally.

What are you currently working on? Are there any upcoming projects or exhibitions we should look forward to?

I’ve been running some community art sessions making an illustrated roof-tile structure for a community garden, alongside my usual itinerary of wholesale orders. I’ve been especially enjoying making small bud vases, playing with classic forms.

The artworks Edmund and Otis have on display are available to purchase in our Collaborative exhibition. To take part in a County Hall Pottery exhibition or to speak to the team, please email gallery@countyhallpottery.com.
