We’re thrilled to announce that Arjan Van Dal has been selected as our next Potter in Residence!
Starting in January 2027, Arjan will become the Third potter to take on the role, building on the spirit of creativity and innovation at County Hall Pottery.
We were truly overwhelmed by the incredible response to the callout, receiving over a hundred applications from talented artists around the world. Our thanks to everyone who applied – it was a joy to witness the breadth, brilliance, and passion reflected across the submissions.
About Arjan Van Dal
Arjans work celebrates the elements of colour and form. The white porcelain is the blank canvas onto which he then layers pigmentation and then shapes, mainly on the potter’s wheel. His pieces play with the tension between the manufactured and the handmade, revealing subtle details as a testimony to the manual process. The result brings both a sense of playfulness and delicateness to his work.
Having made the deliberate decision to change career to pursue a more hands-on path, his practice remains deeply rooted in a crafts-based approach, yet always leads to a design-led outcome. It is on this crossroad of craft and design where his work sits best.
He creates both functional ware and decorative statement pieces, which have been exhibited in galleries in the United Kingdom and beyond.
His inspiration stems from multiple sources including, architecture, modernist design, studio pottery and colour theory. Trained originally as both an engineer and a philosopher, his work reflects those academic foundations: structurally thoughtful, stripped back and clear in concept yet with a lightness and joy.
We’ll be sharing more about Arjan, his creative journey, and his exciting plans for County Hall Pottery in the months ahead. We can’t wait to see what Arjan creates during their time with us!
About the Residency
Our Potter in Residence programme is designed to support talented ceramic artists, designers, and potters in developing their practice, building meaningful professional connections, and becoming part of a vibrant, collaborative community of creatives.
This unique opportunity provides the time, space, and resources to explore new ideas, experiment with techniques, and create an original body of work – all leading up to a dedicated solo exhibition at the end of the residency.
