Pottery Taster Class: Introduction to Wheel Throwing (One-Off Session)
Curious about pottery? Our Wheel Throwing Taster Class is the perfect introduction to working with clay on the wheel. Whether you’re completely new or just want to try something creative, this one-off session offers a fun and hands-on experience in our welcoming London studio. You’ll learn the basics of wheel throwing and take home a piece you’ve made with your own hands.
This is a BYOB session – feel free to bring along your favourite drink to enjoy while you throw!

What You’ll Learn
Guided by our experienced tutors, you’ll explore:

Preparing and wedging clay
-
Centering and shaping clay on the wheel

Creating a simple form such as a cylinder or bowl

Choosing your favourite piece at the end of the session for glazing and firing
Studio Etiquette

Each session includes 2.5 hours of making time and 30 minutes at the end to clean your wheel, tools, and workspace.

Cleanup is part of the class and must be completed before leaving. Our team is not able to clean up after students—thanks for helping us keep the studio running smoothly!
Cancellations & Policies

Cancellations must be made in writing via email.

Refunds or exchanges may be granted at our discretion for cancellations made at least 7 days before the class date.

No refunds or rescheduling will be offered for cancellations made within 48 hours of the scheduled session — no exceptions.

Teacher
Ho Lai is a ceramic artist based in London. Her work explores the contemporary nature of ceramics, experimenting with the materials and processes involved in its creation. She teaches wheel-throwing and hand-building in studios across London.Â
She graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts Hong Kong Baptist University attaining a BA in Visual Arts in 2016, and was awarded the AVA Keeper of Studies Collection Award.  In 2019 Lai graduated from the Royal College of Art attained MA in Ceramics & Glass and was awarded The Grocer’s Hall Scholarship. Upon graduation, she was shortlisted as one of the FRESH exhibition emerging artists at the British Ceramics Biennial.  In 2021, she was shortlisted as the British Ceramics Biennial AWARD exhibition headline artist and was commissioned to create a wall installation named ‘Fluxing Red’, exhibited in Stoke-on-Trent the ceramics capital in the UK.  She was also shortlisted for the European Prize for Applied Arts and the XVII International Contemporary Ceramics Award in the same year. Ho honed her skills in making tableware for fine dining restaurants before venturing into sculptures, giving her a solid foundation and over 10 years of experience in ceramics. Her works are exhibited widely in the UK, France, Spain, Belgium, and Hong Kong. She is currently continuing her artistic practice at Cockpit Arts Deptford studio.
