Join us for a creative and hands-on workshop where you’ll learn to craft your very own traditional slipware gluggle jug with Cadi Froehlich of The Great Pottery Throwdown. This exciting class combines the techniques of pinching and coiling to form a unique piece, perfect for beginners and those looking to refine their hand-building pottery skills. Led by expert ceramicist and instructor Cadi, you’ll discover the art of hand building while exploring the creative world of slipware decoration. Throughout this class, you'll be guided through each step of the process, from shaping your jug to decorating with colourful slips and underglazes.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Pinching and Coiling: Learn how to use pinching and coiling techniques to form the body of a gluggle jug, creating smooth, balanced shapes.

  • Slipware Decoration: Explore the techniques of slip application using brushes, slip trailers, and needlenose bottles to apply intricate designs and textures.

  • Refining the Shape: Master the skills of refining and shaping your jug to perfection, focusing on form and detailing, including the base.

  • Personalized Decoration: Work with a selection of coloured slips and underglazes to create vibrant, contrasting designs that bring your gluggle jug to life.

Who Should Attend: This workshop is perfect for beginners and intermediate ceramic artists who want to explore hand-building techniques and the unique decoration of slipware pottery. Whether you're a first-timer or looking to expand your skills, you’ll leave with a beautiful, handcrafted gluggle jug.

The Workshop Includes:

  • All materials provided, including clay, slips, underglazes, and tools.

  • Bisque firing and glazing of your pieces (firing to be done by the gallery after the workshop).

  • A relaxed, creative environment to explore your artistic side.

Course Structure:

  • 30 min: Welcome and introductions; an overview of the gluggle jug and its history, with examples of completed pieces and cross-sections showing the build stages.

  • 2h 30min: Pinching and coiling to form the bodies of the jugs.

  • 30 min: Detailing and texture demonstration, with examples of different decorative approaches.

  • 1h 30min: Refining the shape, adding finishing details, and shaping the base of the jug.

  • 2h: Slip decorating with brush techniques, slip trailers, and needlenose bottles.

The Gallery will be responsible for bisque firing, glazing, and final firing of your completed pieces.

All cancellations must be submitted in writing via email. Refunds or exchanges may be granted at our discretion for cancellation requests made at least 7 days before the scheduled class, course, or workshop. No refunds or rescheduling will be offered for cancellations made within 48 hours of the workshop. There are no exceptions. However, you can transfer your place to another individual. Please send us their name(s) in advance.
