In this 2 days immersive workshop, you will learn various wheel throwing techniques with ceramist Kazuya Ishida. Native to the renowned Japanese pottery village of Bizen, Kaz will share his unique techniques and his philosophy behind making, teaching the way of expressing primordial beauty of clay with centrifugal force, exploring the rhythm and patterns of Nature. 

Participants will have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of surface textures, and vessel shapes by wheel throwing.  

What you will Learn

Basic Japanese pottery techniques

  • Centering
  • Basic way of throwing with some special key shapes
  • Sake bottle, tea bowl, wide low vessel
  • How to finish bottom
  • Editing shapes off the wheel 

Kaz’s specific techniques

  • Spiral Throwing technique
  • Rahou Spiral wedging
  • Texture
  • Reverse spiral with texture

Course Details: 

DAY 1: 11AM–6PM

  • An introduction by Kazuya Ishida 
  • Getting familiar with the materials, clay tools, the wheel 
  • Basic skills, such as wedging, centering, however we advise that this course is for people that already have some knowledge and can centre and pull a cylinder. 
  • Demonstration of wheel spiral throwing techniques
  • Leading students through textures and spilling techniques

DAY 2: 11AM–6PM

  • Combine some techniques from day 1 
  • Trimming bases and editing shapes
  • refining texture and final 4 pieces

 

Skill Level: Basic throwing experience required
Included: All materials, tools, glazes, and up to four fired pieces to the weight of 1 bag of stoneware clay, general studio materials)
Class Size: Limited to 10 to ensure personalised attention
Price: £250 per person
Participants are encouraged to bring their own tools, including a cheeze slicer and any zigzag tools that are useful to make textures.
 

All cancellations must be submitted in writing via email. Refunds or exchanges may be granted at our discretion for cancellation requests made at least 7 days before the scheduled class, course, or workshop. No refunds or rescheduling will be offered for cancellations made within 48 hours of the workshop. There are no exceptions. However, you can transfer your place to another individual. Please send us their name(s) in advance.
